Youthful beginnings – hard work pays off
Craig Robson’s first job revolved around construction and asphalt. He learned the ropes, studied the machinery and processes, and quickly became skilled in running much of the plant’s operations. At first he was satisfied with the tough, labor-intensive job, not intending to return to school after high school graduation.
A few years later with a wife and young children to support, Craig’s ambitions grew with the need to provide for his family. He returned to college and studied the engineering and scientific principles behind the work he already knew. With a civil engineering degree in hand, Craig returned to the construction industry. He worked for a nationwide asphalt company and on various large-scale construction jobs before setting out on his own
Modern Construction USA Inc. evolves into Superior Asphalt.
In 1998, Craig founded Modern Construction USA Inc., a Manatee County grading and mass excavation company. As the south Florida landscape experienced unprecedented growth, his company emerged with a spotless reputation for quality workmanship. Craig’s company purchased a large tract of land in Manatee County to house its growing operations and equipment.
The property had formerly housed an asphalt plant. Realizing the land was already zoned for asphalt production, Craig—with several loyal team members—made the decision to return to the industry they knew so well. Starting in 2000 and launching in 2001, they built the expansive, high-volume hot-mix asphalt production plant known as Superior Asphalt. For several years, Modern Construction USA and Superior Asphalt both operated successfully under the expertise of a team of skilled construction and asphalt professionals. Eventually, Craig chose to scale down the operations of Modern Construction and focus on the growing paving and asphalt sector.
Superior Asphalt today – recognized by regional leaders as a preferred contractor, road builder, and asphalt provider.
Today, Superior Asphalt is recognized as a preferred contractor, road builder, and hot-mix asphalt provider by many of the region’s builders, developers, and government departments of transportation.
The company’s strengths lie in its reputation for quality workmanship; its solid long-term community relationships built over years of working together and giving back to the community, and in its people—the superior knowledge, work ethic, and loyalty of its team. The company has endured many economic seasons based on its healthy financial strength and continued, repeat customers.
